M.A. Zaki Badawi is chairman of the Imams and Mosques Council of the United Kingdom in London, a post he has held since 1984, and the founder and principal of the Muslim College in London, which stresses a broad knowledge of Islam as well as the importance of a clear understanding of Western society and world religions. From 1983 to 1986, Dr. Badawi served as director of the Islamic Finance House, was a member of the Islamic Banking System in Luxembourg, and from 1978 to 1981, he was director and chief imam of the Islamic Cultural Centre and London Central Mosque in Regents Park. Before coming to the United Kingdom, Dr. Badawi was a professor of Islamic studies at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, northern Nigeria; a research professor at the Hajj Research Center of King Abdul University in Saudi Arabia; a professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Malaya in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur; the founder of the Muslim College of Malaya; and a professor of Muslim thought and scientific research methods at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Dr. Badawi received a B.A. from the Faculty of Theology and an M.A. from the Faculty of Arabic Studies at Al-Azhar University; a B.A. in psychology from University College London; and a Ph.D. in modern Muslim thought from London University.
