LOWELL S. LEVIN (chair) is associate director and professor Emeritus of the WHO/Yale Collaborating Center on Health Promotion Policy at Yale University School of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Levin began his career at the University of Vermont School of Medicine where his focus was on the health of the rural poor (needs assessment, tuberculosis, nutritional deficits). In 1960, he was appointed director of a national health resources study at the University of Pittsburgh, with a research focus on gender bias in the biosciences. Simultaneously, he served as a consultant to the Milbank Memorial Fund in Latin America, with his work focus on capacity building in community health. Since he began his post at Yale in 1963, and prior to becoming director of the WHO/Yale Collaborating Center on Health Promotion, he established the Division of Global Health. His work supports the WHO European office in Venice on the social and economic determinants of health. Dr. Levin specializes in resources in health, social capital citizen participation in health care, self-care, and the control of iatrogenic complications in medical care. He received a Master’s degree in educational administration from Stanford University, a M.P.H. from Yale University, and a doctorate in education from Harvard University. He served as a faculty member at Salzburg Seminar Session 391, The Social and Economic Determinants of the Public’s Health, 2001.
