Lizeka Mda

Executive Editor, The Star, Johannesburg, South Africa

Lizeka MDA, a journalist since 1984, is executive editor of The Star, the largest

daily paper in South Africa. She has also produced radio programs, and published

comics and short stories. In the early 1990s, Ms. Mda was Johannesburg bureau

chief for Cape Town-based Femina magazine. She was features and then deputy

editor for Tribute magazine until January 1997. Ms. Mda was employed as a senior

writer at the Mail & Guardian until June 1998, when she joined The Star as

features editor, responsible for the OpEd page and “Verve,” the lifestyle section. In

1993, she was a World Press Institute Fellow at Macalester College, Minnesota,

and in 1997, a Ron Brown Fellow with the National Minority Business Council,

New York.
