Lewis Erenberg

Professor of History, Loyola University, Chicago

Lewis Erenberg is professor of history at Loyola University in Chicago, where he teaches courses on United States social and cultural history with a special concentration on the history of American entertainment and popular culture. Professor Erenberg most recent book, The Greatest Fight of Our Generation examines the historical, cultural, and social significance of the second boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. In 2000, Professor Erenberg was awarded the inaugural distinguished Fulbright chair of United States cultural history at the University of Salzburg, and from 1990 to 1991 he was a senior Fulbright lecturer at the University of Munich's Amerika Institut. Additional books written by Professor Erenberg include Swingin' the Dream: Big Band Jazz and the Rebirth of American Culture, The War in American Culture, Society and Consciousness during World War II, and Steppin' Out: New York Nightlife and the Transformation of American Culture. Professor Erenberg received a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. from The University of Michigan.
