Leila Seth is a member of the Law Commission of India, a reform body charged with promoting justice and making recommendations for better governance in that nation. She was called to the Bar in the United Kingdom in 1957, and thereafter practised law in Calcutta, Patna, and Delhi, ultimately as a senior advocate. She was appointed a judge of Delhi High Court in 1978. In 1991 Justice Seth was appointed chief justice of the State of Himachal Prades at Simla. She is the first woman to serve as a judge in the Delhi High Court, and the first woman to be appointed chief justice of a state court in India. In 1995 Justice Seth was appointed as head of the Commission of Inquiry regarding medical facilities for prisoners in Delhi. She has acted as legal advisor for the National Commission for Women, and is a member of both the Citizens’ Commission on Child and Bonded Labor, and the International Committee on the Legal Aspects of Inter-Country Adoption. Justice Seth serves as vice-president of the World Wide Fund for Nature, India, and is on the Governing Board of the Population Foundation of India and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. She is interested in issues pertaining to prisoners, women, education, environment, population, children, and human rights. She holds a degree in law from Lincoln’s Inn, London.
