Leila Butt is senior editor/economist and deputy manager for the country risk services of the Economist Intelligence Unit. As senior economist in the east European department of the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Country Analysis and Forecasting Division, she specializes in political and economic developments in Eastern Europe. As an economist representing the EIU's views on the global economy to clients in the Americas, Ms. Butt also keeps track of key global trends. As deputy manager of the EIU's Country Risk Services, she works on product development related to the company's country credit risk offerings. She is responsible for monitoring and appraising the EIU's assessments of currency and sovereign debt risk in the countries in Eastern Europe. Ms. Butt has also led the development of several benchmarking indices that follow the example of the Global Peace Index. She was project leader and research manager for a Women's Economic Opportunity index (produced with the support of the World Bank), which assesses 113 countries by how conducive their societies and legal frameworks are to women's economic participation in the formal sector. Ms. Butt holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in economics from the London School of Economics.
