Andrew Sillen

Andrew SILLEN is deputy director of development for the Synergos Institute, which he joined after living for sixteen years in South Africa where he was director of development for the University of Cape Town (UCT). In that position, Dr. Sillen planned and implemented one of most successful capital campaigns in the developing world, resulting in 100% private funding for a new central library for UCT, and new facilities for the Commerce and Engineering faculties. In addition to the capital campaign, Dr. Sillen raised substantial United States foundation funds to provide graduate scholarships for African students. Before turning to development, Dr. Sillen was professor of Paleoanthropology and head of UCT's Archaeology Department. He has published over thirty-five articles on African archaeology, the origin of food production, and the evolution of human diets; and is the co-discoverer of the earliest recorded association of humans with fire in the archaeological record. He holds a B.A. from Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
