Lani Guinier is professor of law at Harvard University. Until July 1998 she taught at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Professor Guinier is a former civil rights lawyer, serving with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., and the U.S. Department of Justice. Her teaching interests range from voting rights, professional responsibility, criminal process, and public interest lawyering to issues of race and gender. Professor Guinier has devoted major efforts to revitalizing public discourse in America, including a reemphasis on multiracial citizen problem solving. She created COMMONPLACE, a national nonprofit center to connect citizens, communities and ideas, and RACETALKS, a project to create opportunities for multiracial problem solving and collaboration. She is the author of The Tyranny of the Majority: Fundamental Fairness in Representative Democracy and most recently of Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice. Professor Guinier is a graduate of Radcliffe College, Massachusetts, and received the J.D. from Yale Law School, Connecticut.
