Kasha Nabagesera

Executive Director of Kuchutimes Media Group, Uganda

Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera is the executive director at Kuchu Times Media Group, which runs the Bombastic Magazine, TV, and Radio and the founder and long-term executive director of Freedom and Roam Uganda. She works as a queer feminist, fighting for the rights of LGBT persons not only in Uganda but in Africa as a whole. In 2010, she was elected the most inspiring queer woman in the world by the Velvetpark Magazine, which described her as a "Braveheart." In 2011, as the world was celebrating 100th year of International Women's Day, she was listed on the Women Deliver 100 list, as well as among the 50 most inspiring feminist women in Africa. In the same year Kasha was awarded The Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders, which is often considered as the Nobel Price for human rights and is chosen by a jury of ten leading international human rights organizations. She has continued to live in Uganda and is currently suing the government for the continuous closure of LGBT gatherings. Kasha was among the petitioners that challenged the anti-homosexuality law in the constitutional court that later nullified the law. Originally an accountant by profession, Kasha changed careers and obtained a Human Rights Advocacy diploma from Human Rights Education Associates in Massachusetts, USA. In 2013 she was Awarded the Nuremberg International Human rights award and in 2015 the Right Livelihood Award considered as the Alternative Noble peace prize. Kasha is the first openly gay person to grace the cover of TIME magazine the European Edition. She is a Stanford University Draper Hills Fellow 2016. Kasha has amassed a number of awards and recognition for her resilience in fighting for equality and freedoms of sexual minorities. She currently runs the only LGBTI magazine on the African continent and an online Television and Radio focusing on issues of LGBTI and women's rights. She is is a returning Fellow of the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum.
