Kari Tapiola is executive director for Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work for the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland. During his career at the ILO he was deputy director-general of the ILO and a member of the governing body. Prior to that, Mr. Tapiola worked at the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions in Helsinki. Prior to that, he was general secretary of the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD in Paris. His expertise includes multinational enterprises, globalization, labor standards, and industrial relations. He completed his studies in political history at Helsinki University. Mr. Tapiola has served on the faculty of several Salzburg Global Seminar sessions and co-chaired Session 397, Global Economic Institutions: Change, Dialogue and Public Policy, in 2002.
