Juan Fernando López Aguilar is the minister of the Spanish Ministry of Justice, a position he has held since 2004. He was elected national representative for the province of Las Palmas in 2000 and is the secretary of public freedom ad autonomous development Executive Federal Direction of Spain's Socialist Labor Party. From 1990 to 1993, he was the parliamentary advisor to ministers of Justice Enrique Múgica and Tomás Quadra-Salcedo. From 1993 to 1998 he was general director of the Cabinet of the Minister Jerónimo Saavedra in the Ministry of Public Administrations and in the Ministry of Science and Education. Justice López Aguilar also coordinated the office of the socialist candidate to the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands in 1999. He has published several books and articles on topics related to constitutional law, comparative law, fundamental rights, and judicial systems. He received degrees from several universities, including the University of Granada, Complutense University, University of Bologna, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, USA.
