John Mathiason

Adjunct Professor of International Relations, Syracuse University, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse, New York

John R. Mathiason is adjunct professor of international relations at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, New York. He is also managing director of Associates for International Management Services, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in training and advisory services in international and NGO management, community development, and information services. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Mathiason worked for the United Nations Secretariat in New York. From 1987 to 1996, he served as deputy director of the Division for the Advancement of Women. In this capacity, he managed support to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, including the drafting of the World Survey on the Role of Women in Development, 1989 and 1994, and numerous reports to the UN Commission on the Status of Women. A specialist in management of international organizations, he has published studies on results-based management, international action on ageing, and Internet governance. He received a B.A. from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.
