Confidence Uwazuruike

Bournemouth Univeristy, United Kingdom

I am a Nigerian and currently studying in England where I am rounding off an MA in Multimedia Journalism at Bournemouth University. Journalism is a relatively new field for me as I have a purely scientific background. I have an undergraduate degree in Microbiology. After college, I taught science for about two years and then spent one year researching malaria at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. I, however, was drawn to journalism firstly by my love for the news, writing and politics but, more importantly I realised the power of the media in directing public discourses from news framing. I spent three weeks in India between April and May watching the World's largest democracy vote for new leaders. I worked with rediff.com and wonobo.com as a parachute journalist for Project India. Project India is a Bournemouth University- led corroboration with other institutions in India to cover the Indian elections. Currently, my main interest is in conflict journalism especially African media framing of terrorism. I will be focusing on the Boko Haram insurgency in my MA dissertation and will then do a broader study on the same subject when I begin my doctoral research later in the year. Hopefully I will develop models that will assist in conflict resolutions not only in my country but also sub-Saharan Africa and developing countries around the world.
