Jan Urban

Professor, New York University in Prague, and founding member of the Civic Forum

Jan Urban is an editor and commentator for Czech Radio. He is the former publisher of Transitions, an English-language monthly published in Prague by the Open Media Research Institute. Before the November 1989 "Velvet Revolution," Mr. Urban was one of the leading Czech dissidents, active with the only international dissident network, the Eastern European Information Agency. In June, 1990, he led the Civic Forum, a political movement that won the first Czech free elections. In addition to serving as a journalist for Lidove noviny, from 1991 until 1994, Mr. Urban made six trips to Central America to study the problems of post-conflict societies and the media. In 1994, he served for nine months as a deputy executive editor for Czech TV news. Prior to accepting his current position, Mr. Urban traveled extensively throughout the former Yugoslavia in an attempt to implement humanitarian aid as well as to report on the war in Bosnia. He is the recipient of numerous awards. Mr. Urban is an alumnus of Salzburg Seminar Special Session, Justice in Times of Transition; was a faculty member for Session 347, Journalism in the Information Age, 1997; and is a former Board Member and Senior Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar.
