Heinz Schaden is the mayor of the city of Salzburg. In 1992 the Salzburg municipal division of the Social Democrat Party named him deputy mayor and in 1999, Dr. Schaden became Salzburg's first directly elected mayor. Earlier in his career, Dr. Schaden served as the superintendent of the Styrian secondary school system, faculty representative for the University of Salzburg's Department of Political Science, and cabinet head of the State Secretary's Ministry for Buildings and Construction in Vienna. In 1987, he returned to Salzburg where he was responsible for the Chamber of Labor's Public Relations Department. He began his political career in the late 1980's when he served on a citizens' committee and became involved in a local section of the Social Democrat Party which addressed issues related to industry, trade, housing, and traffic. Dr. Schaden received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Paris Lodron University, Salzburg.
