Julie Morath

Consultant and leadership advisor in healthcare, Former President and CEO, Hospital Quality Institute, USA

Julianne (Julie) Morath is an executive coach and consultant and had the privilege of serving the White House as one of six members of a patient safety work group of PCAST for the past two years. An advanced practice nurse by background, Morath's career includes over thirty years as a healthcare executive with academic faculty appointments. She is a founding member of the Lucian Leape Institute at IHI, a member of multiple national boards, and currently Affiliate faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle. Morath holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Michigan, Master's degree in Psychiatry and Community Mental Health from the University of California, San Francisco and completed doctoral course work in Social Psychology at the University of Cincinnati. She is a frequent speaker and has been honored with national awards for her professional contributions. She has multiple publications , contributed multiple chapters and has authored two books. She is passionate about safety and a student of reliability and resilience as well as the inclusion of patients, families, and communities as partners in healthcare, with emphasis on those populations that have been harmed and/or those whose voices have been marginalized or silent. Her most recent position was President and CEO of the CA Hospital Quality Institute, supporting the work of over 400 hospitals and health systems in California until her retirement in 2021.
