Past Program

Financial Services in the Post-Pandemic Era: An Opportunity for a Green and Digitally Enabled Recovery

Online

13:45 to 17:30 CEST / 07:45 to 11:30 ET on June 21 and June 22

Overview

COVID-19 has changed the landscape and structure of the financial industry, compressing into a few months changes expected to take years, accelerating the rise of the state, and adding pressure on financial services to adapt to new social, economic and geopolitical conditions. Climate action is increasingly a question of geopolitical competition, and financial services will be called upon to assume a leading role in providing the financial means for meeting sustainability goals.

The annual multi-day program of the Salzburg Global Finance Forum drew on the preceding three short online programs to tackle the geopolitical and market issues confronting the financial services industry in the face of the systemic changes wrought by short-term shocks such as the coronavirus pandemic and longer-term issues such as climate change, and examine how policymakers and industry leaders are stepping up to new challenges.

Time: 13:00 to 18:00 CET / 07:00 to 12:00 ET on June 21 and June 22

Plenary Discussions: Industry experts opened with candid insights, leading discussions around the main topics.

Breakout Discussions: Smaller group discussions on subtopics were moderated by Salzburg Global staff and Fellows, allowing for deeper dives and wider exploration.

Facilitated Networking: Salzburg Global provided ongoing networking opportunities between participants and the wider Salzburg Global Fellowship via online “Kaffeeklatsch” meetups, dedicated listservs and a regular newsletter.

Virtual Coffee Breaks: Small, regular meetups beyond the webinars enabled participants to continue the conversations beyond the formal programming.

Participants

The annual multi-day program of the Salzburg Global Finance Forum brings together approximately 60 senior leaders and rising specialists as a community of peers.

Participants include senior and rising leaders from financial services firms (including commercial and investment banks, asset managers, private equity and pension funds, and fintech companies), supervisory and regulatory authorities, public policy leaders and professional service providers (including law firms and consultancies).

Outcomes

Peer dialogue with speakers provided participants with broader regional perspectives, industry-relevant insights and specific policy recommendations thus strengthening their ability to lead though the disrupted forces accelerated by the Covid-19 crisis.

Salzburg Questions: Participants were invited to contribute the “Salzburg Questions” series – a new monthly Fellow-written op-ed series modeled on the successful series from the Corporate Governance Forum – which will then distributed via a dedicated newsletter.
