Salzburg Global Continues 70th Anniversary Celebrations at Board of Directors Weekend

Board members and guests convene at Schloss Leopoldskron for annual meeting with a special focus

The theme for Salzburg Global's 2017 program is "courage"

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow,” said Mary Ann Radmacher. For seven decades, Salzburg Global Seminar has typified that little voice, trying each day to help solve some of the world’s most complex challenges.

This week, Salzburg Global will continue to mark its 70th anniversary at its annual Board of Directors Weekend. Building on the organization's 2017 program theme of "courage," a distinguished group of international guests who have all shown courage at various points in their life will be among the attendees.

Guests will join Salzburg Global Directors at Schloss Leopoldskron for a weekend of intellectual conversation, music, food, fellowship, and celebration. The weekend is an opportunity for Salzburg Global to take stock of its past, present, and future as it renews its mission.

Activities will start on Friday evening with the inaugural Salzburg Global Lecture. Thuli Madonsela, a human rights lawyer and former Public Protector of South Africa, will deliver the speech before taking part in a question and answer session.

Madonsela was one of 11 technical experts who helped draft South Africa’s constitution in 1994 and 1995. She is the co-architect of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, the Employment Equity Act, and Local Government Transition Act. Madonsela also played a significant role in the policy framework that formed the basis of South Africa's Ministry for Women, Children, and Persons with Disability.

The theme of "courage" will be prevalent throughout the weekend. On Saturday, guests will take part in panel discussions on “Speaking Truth to Power,” “Courage and Culture,” and “Courage for the Long Haul.” Panelists include award-winning political cartoonist Tom Toles and founding member of the EY Global Women in Business Advisory Council Seema Khan. Guests will also hear from Ferdinand Richard, president of the Roberto Cimetta Fund, an organization which supports artists in conflict zones and LGBT rights activist Bisi Alim, both of whom are Salzburg Global Fellows.

On Sunday morning, guests will be walked through pivotal moments in Salzburg Global's history by Salzburg Global Fellows as part of a fireside chat on the "Four Ages of Salzburg Global Seminar."

In among the discussions, participants and guests will experience a weekend full of fun, flavor, and festivities. Salzburg Global will showcase the delights of the local area, from its delicious food and drink to its scenic hotspots. The David Gazarov Trio and the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet will provide musical entertainment. Guests will also visit Schloss Frohnburg for a concert commemorating the centennial of Edward T. Cone - a long-serving board member whose estate continues to support Salzburg Global Seminar's arts and culture sessions.

This weekend will be the third occasion in 2017 Salzburg Global celebrates its 70th anniversary. At its previous board meeting in March, the Seminar hosted a special anniversary debate entitled "Angry World: Great Unraveling… or Wake-up Call?” Toward the end of April, meanwhile, current and former members of staff were invited back to Schloss Leopoldskron for a homecoming weekend. Further festivities are planned throughout the year.
