Phaan Howng

Artist, United States of America

Phaan Howng, based in Baltimore, USA, creates paintings and immersive installations that center around the Earth defensively brandishing its landscape in a post-human future. She incorporates theatrical elements in her work to place viewers in idealized or satirical speculative futures to encourage reflection on current ecological conditions. Her research into landscape theory, anthropology, and history grounds these interrogations of Western concepts of nature, humans, and time. She has presented solo exhibitions at museums including at the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and MoCA Arlington in Virginia. Her work was featured in publications such as The New York Times T List, Smithsonian Magazine, Maake Magazine, Artnet, and the front page of the Baltimore Sun. Phaan received her B.F.A. in Painting from Boston University in 2004 and her M.F.A. from the Mt. Royal School of Art at MICA in 2015.
