Joshua Kleinfeld

Joshua is a full professor with tenure at the Northwestern University Law School and (by courtesy) department of philosophy. His work focuses on the theory and practice of democracy, particularly in criminal law, where he is a founding figure in the movement to democratize American criminal justice. He is an internationally known scholar, with articles in the Harvard Law Review, Yale Law Journal, and Stanford Law Review, and visiting professorships at Harvard and Stanford Law Schools. He is a public intellectual, speaking and writing on diverse topics of public concern, including a TEDx talk on preserving democracy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. And he is a former practicing criminal defense lawyer, representing both major corporations accused of billion-dollar wrongdoing and, on a pro bono basis, children accused of homicide. Joshua holds a Juris Doctorate in law from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Goethe University of Frankfurt.
