Amal Basha

Director, Sisters' Arab Forum for Human Rights, Sana'a

Amal Basha is the Chairperson of the Sisters' Arab Forum for Human Rights (SAF) and advisor for the International Coalition on the Criminal Court and for the Ministry of Human Rights in Yemen. In her role with SAF, she defends the rights of women, prisoners and refugees, and fights for more political freedoms. Previously, she served as program officer for the UNDP, and worked closely with the UN, the International Human Rights Law Group, and the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation in Yemen. As a human rights activist, she presented a comprehensive report on torture in Yemen to the United Nations in 2009. Earlier in her career, Ms. Basha was head of Section for Bilateral Relations and then for International Organizations at the Ministry of Economy, Supply and Trade in Yemen, before becoming the head of Section for Foreign Relations at the Ministry of Industry. Ms. Basha studied political science, economics and mass communication at the American University in Cairo, holds an M.A. in public administration from the National Institute for Administrative Sciences (NIAS), one in empirical research and women studies from Sana'a University and in international development and gender from the University of Sussex, UK.
