Salzburg Global Fellow Anne Odongo reflects upon her experience in Public Policy New Voices Europe
This op-ed was written by Anne Odongo, who attended the Public Policy New Voices Europe program "Advancing Together: Empowering Diverse Leadership in Public Policy" in Salzburg from September 24 to 28, 2023.
Embarking on the journey with Salzburg Global Seminar was like stepping into a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of diversity and the promise of a better world. My connection with this incredible organization predates my role as a Salzburg Global Fellow of Public Policy New Voices Europe, and what drew me in was the profound commitment to challenging leaders, both present and future, to shape a more inclusive and equitable global landscape.
The allure isn't just a distant admiration for the organization's programs; it comes alive the moment you set foot in Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg Global Seminar's majestic residence. Retaining its opulent charm, the Schloss stands as a modern-day sphinx, embodying the ancient Greek principle of "equal speech" — the equal right to engage in meaningful debates on matters of policy.
Public Policy New Voices Europe stands at the forefront of empowering young leaders in public policy, emphasizing an equitable, inclusive, and forward-thinking design. True to its name, Public Policy New Voices Europe amplifies the voices of often-overlooked young and diverse individuals. In a world rife with polarization and grappling with challenges like climate change and novel infections, the need for inclusive and empowered leadership at various levels is more critical than ever.
As a Salzburg Global Fellow of Public Policy New Voices Europe, I discovered the transformative power of bringing together a group of like-minded yet diverse individuals. The magic unfolded in the exchange of ideas, collective action, and the audacity to challenge the status quo. What I carry with me from this fellowship is the understanding that true inclusivity goes beyond representation; it involves a harmonious blend of ideas, possibilities, collaborations, and support.
Reflecting on my time as a Fellow, I am reminded of the importance of considering not only the current generation but also those who came before us and those who will follow. The need for new voices in public policy is pressing, and as an aspiring policy leader, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Salzburg Global, the Walt Disney Company, and other supporters for providing a platform that fosters lifelong impact.
In a world where history is being written every day, Salzburg Global Seminar and its supporters have become the architects of change, empowering a dynamic army of policymakers. May their legacy be etched in the annals of history as the catalysts that shaped a new era of inclusive and well-equipped leaders. Cheers to a future where diverse voices converge to create policies that stand the test of time!
