Strengthening Independent Media

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation provides scholarship support for outstanding journalists to attend selected Salzburg Global Seminar conferences

The Salzburg Global Seminar is awarding fellowships in 2011 as part of the Salzburg Media Initiative with the generous support the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In 2011, three editors and news managers from the United States and three from outside the United States will be selected to participate in a five-day session of the Salzburg Global Seminar. These will be young, diverse editors and news managers, responsible for audiences that reach into the millions or otherwise have great impact.

REQUIREMENTS
The fellowships are awarded to editors working in print, broadcast, and web media. Applicants must have a solid track record in covering the respective subject area of the session they wish to apply for. For the current calendar please click here.

APPLICATIONS
This is a highly selective and competitive program, and final selections will be made by the Salzburg Global Seminar and its partners, and will include such considerations as professional experience, gender, and country diversity as well as an overall assessment of the value to the individual and to the Seminar.

Applicants and nominees are asked to provide a 1-2 page statement explaining their work, research or professional interests, and an updated CV with their address, current position and affiliation, and citizenship. They should also include two letters of recommendation, with one of the recommendations coming from their employer.

DEADLINES
Nominees will be evaluated and selected on a rolling basis.

FELLOWSHIP REQUIREMENTS
The selected nominee is expected to participate actively in the five-day session in Salzburg, including web-based activities before, during and after the session, for a total of approximately six weeks. During this period, the nominee will also act as a “visiting editorial consultant” to the Salzburg Global Seminar and will work with the program staff to develop session-related content for the Seminar website. Following the fellowship, the nominee will be among the more than 27,000 alumni of the Salzburg Global Seminar around the world.
