SGS Resident Fellows Program
Time to think. Space to breathe. A place to create. These have been the guiding principles of artist in residency programs for a generation. As well as this model has functioned in the past, the 21st century demands more. The idea of the artist secluded among his own cadre has reached its limits. What if there was a place where artists, scholars, academics and SGS fellows from all backgrounds could mingle with some of the greatest leaders and thinkers of the day while still having the time and space to both create and reflect? A prolonged session if you like. The Salzburg Global Seminar is currently working on this intriguing idea. By creating a resident fellow program the Seminar can create an environment where people are intermingling, as well as provide a platform for creative expression: a kind of sabbatical for reflection and personal development at the same time. This residency will last between one and three months; long enough to get work done, but short enough for working people to commit to. Fellows will stay at the Meierhof and will be part of the daily life of other resident staff members. But space is more than physical, it is mental as well. To that end this residency cannot simply be geared towards the creation of new work. While most, if not all, fellows invited will use the opportunity to create new work, having the space to reflect and edit previously created work is just as valuable. One of the goals of every residency should be a public presentation of the fellow’s work and if a fellow proposes a specific project to be accomplished while in residence then an exhibition or presentation of that work should happen as well. Whenever possible and appropriate, fellows should take part in the life of the Seminar, attending symposiums and dinners and contributing their perspectives to the discussions which follow.
The Salzburg Global Seminar is currently in the planning phase of this program and invites SGS fellows to send their comments and thoughts.
