Biography:
Charles E. MORRISON is president of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has had extensive involvement in the conceptualization, organization, and funding of policy-oriented educational research and dialogue projects in both Japan and the United States, and has long been involved in promoting the concept of Asia Pacific community. In September 2005, he was elected international chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. He is a founding member of the US Asia Pacific Council, the US National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation and a member of the US Committee for Security Cooperation in Asia Pacific. Dr. Morrison is a past chair of the US National Consortium of APEC Study Centers, a former director of the Centers Program on International Economics and Politics, a former US Senate aide, and a former research adviser to binational Japan-US commissions. His publications include, Japan, ASEAN, and East Asia from an American Perspective; Community Building with Pacific Asia (report to the Trilateral Commission); ASEAN: Forum, Caucus & Community; Asia Pacific Crossroads: Regime Creation and the Future of APEC; Development Cooperation in the 21st Century: Implications for APEC; and Asia Pacific Security Outlook: 2005 (annually from 1997). Dr. Morrison holds a Ph.D. in international relations from The John Hopkins University, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Washington DC.
