A Long History of American Studies Programs
at the Salzburg Global Seminar
When the Salzburg Global Seminar first began, in 1947, it was called "The Salzburg Seminar in American Studies". Although the times have changed, and the Salzburg Global Seminar's pallette of programs evolved into international and multi-disciplinary offerings... the tradition of American Studies should not be neglected.
The Salzburg Seminar American Studies Association (SSASA) was founded in 2003 to build upon the positive momentum stemming from thirty-two sessions organized by the American Studies Center between 1994 and 2002. The purpose of SSASA is to provide a forum for anyone working in the field of American Studies to interact with experts in the field by meeting annually at Schloss Leopoldskron to attend symposia devoted to broad American Studies themes. The annual symposia are attended by distinguished professionals from a wide number of countries around the world. Through such American Studies symposia, the Salzburg Global Seminar continues to make a vital contribution to the promotion of open, international dialogue.
The 2012 symposium on “Resistance and Readiness: Immigration, Nativism and the Challenge of Ethnic and Religious Diversity in the US and Europe Today” will take place
at Schloss Leopoldskron from 27 September to 1 October, 2012. Topics to be discussed will be grounds for migration (push and pull factors), dichotomies between “natives” and “newcomers” and their significance in the US and Europe, identities and distinctions between “they” and “we” as expressed in politics and in the art and literature of marginality, patterns of adaptation and integration -- and isolation, and the varied meanings of “tolerance”.
The 2012 symposium entitled "Screening America: Film and Television in the 21st Century" will take place at Schloss Leopoldskron from 15 to 19 November, 2012. It will focus on American films and television as major instruments of multiple dimensions of communication.
For any questions, contact the symposium director, Ms. Marty Gecek, mgecek@SalzburgGlobal.org
Below, you will find links to several web pages which were created as part of previous American Studies programs. Even back in the 90's, the participants were using the latest in technologies, to present their ideas, collaborations, and findings, on the Web. While this is not an all inclusive listing, we have done our best to gather together as many of these pages as possible. Please be aware that given the fact that most of these projects were created well over a decade ago... it is possible that some of the links may be broken or unavailable.
