Similarities, Differences and Points of Convergence: Transatlantic Perspectives on Higher Education

Abstract

The 24th symposium of the Universities Project was the final event of the six-year funding cycle granted by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in 1997. The goal of the symposium was to convene a group of those individuals who had worked closely with the Universities Project since its inception and who contributed in so many ways to make the Project an unqualified success.

The discussions were conducted under the theme: Similarities, Differences and Points of Convergence: Transatlantic Perspectives on Higher Education, which was intended to allow the group to look both back and forward. The discussions included but were not limited to: the international strategies of universities, the public/private interface in higher education, and the changing role of faculty and higher education as a central element in modern knowledge societies.
