Biography:
Ernest Fleischmann has been artistic director of the enterprising Ojai Festival in California since 1998, as well as a consultant to musical organizations, lecturer, and juror at musical competitions throughout the world. Mr. Fleischmann also currently serves as the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s artistic consultant. From 1969 to 1988, he was executive director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and general director of the Hollywood Bowl, working closely with music director Zubin Mehta. During his tenure he initiated numerous important new projects, and played a significant role in the Philharmonic’s development as a world-class orchestra. In 1988, his title changed to executive vice president and managing director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. Mr. Fleischmann was instrumental in the engagement of Carlo Maria Guilini and Esa-Pekka Salonen, as well as Andre Previn, as music directors of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He was responsible for Sir Simon Rattle’s American debut and for the frequent Los Angeles appearances of Pierre Boulez and Kurt Sanderling. Mr. Fleischmann has degrees in both music and business. He is an alumnus of Salzburg Seminar Session 309, Economics of the Arts, 1993, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Salzburg Seminar – Alberto Vilar Project on Critical Issues for the Classical Performing Arts.
